The follow-up appointment with the surgeon went well. Travis is recovering nicely. His chest XRAY and his white blood count were both normal. For the past ten days, we have been diligently counting calories and protein - in order for Trav to maintain his weight he needs 2,600 calories (oh, how would it be?) and around 100 grams of protein per day. His nightly tube feedings provide 1,200 calories and 75 grams of protein. He needs to make up the difference in soft foods. Right now, his favorites are mashed potatoes and gravy, yogurt, juices, and cottage cheese. We also needed to track his blood pressure and heart rate - since Travis did so well on his calorie intake and maintaining his weight (about 180 lbs), he no longer has to count his calories everyday. We go back in one month to schedule a date to get the stent removed which will be around the first of August.
Travis is dealing with some pain issues on his sides, on one side it can be attributed to the thoracic surgery and the nerve endings. On the other side, its the pain from shingles (yes, he has shingles). He has a small patch of them on his belly, they are due from his immunities being low and stress.
He also has neuropathy (numbness on his fingertips and feet). Neuropathy is a side effect to one of the chemotherapy treatments he took last winter. He is going to try some medication to see if that will improve, so he can get back to work.
We do see small improvements everyday. His voice seems to be stronger and he is feeling more like himself. We have to keep reminding ourselves that he was in the hospital for a long time, and its best if we don't rush things.

ok so I have the new kids song in my head "step by step". This will be a marathon, not a sprint. You guys are doing great! Still prayin' for ya too.
Hello!
I've recently stumbled across your journal and I wanted to say hi and offer hope and positive thoughts!
My husband, Hans, was diagnosed with gastro-esophageal cancer in July 2005...the day before his 33rd birthday... We had just watched his 34 yr old sister lose a battle with breast cancer and never ever thought it would strike twice.
We went to MD Anderson hospitial in Houston (we live near Atlanta) for his surgery. Surgery and recovery was...well, you know. Surreal and terrifying all wrapped into one. He had a leak and we lived in that hospital for 8 weeks. A second surgery took place to repair the leak. Meanwhile, my kids aged 2 and 5 were still in Georgia with family.
He was stage 3, and 15 out of 29 lymph nodes tested positive for cancer. He had follow up chemo and radiation here at home.
Hans also had those awful shingles soon after surgery. And he is now left with severe nerve damage across his right side...the thoracic pain. We go ever three months for a 'pain block' shot to try and help that pain. Also, if other pain killers don't help your husband with that pain ask for one called tramadol which is a non-narcotic and really helps my husband. I pulled that darn jtube myself after a few months, much to the delight of his surgeons...they laughed and laughed at me and said they expected no less from Hans bulldog wife. I kept that hospital hopping! Weight is still an issue and he lost 75 lbs. But he's so busy that he works off all those calories!
Sorry this is so long! But here we are in 2008 and in a few weeks Hans will go for his THREE year checkup. All of the top doctors and surgeons at md anderson have told us that this cancer usually returns in the first two years, but that doesn't stop us from being scared and cautious about our future.
If you ever have any questions, please please contact us. We now talk to people from all over who are going through this. My email is amy@amyrue.com and Hans is hans@luna7.com
Please take care, my thoughts are with you and your family!
Amy
Well, I guess Step by Step is the phrase of the day. Good luck, Kar! Keeping the thoughts positive. We are still praying nightly that the recovery continues and the stress decreases! Damn shingles!!!
OUCH TO SHINGLES! That would be awful! Joe has been sick a lot since his surgery too, but it is slowly getting better... so I am sure he will do great! Way to go on gaining weight!!!
Amy, I'm excited you wrote! Thanks for the wealth of information. It's nice to know that others have gone through similar experiences and made it. I will contact you. Thanks again for commenting on my blog.
